We at BULLY DOG CREW are a family business, a family who has always been obsessed with dogs. I wish I could say that we were always the best dog parents but to be completely honest, our dogs at one time (many years ago) were just, well, dogs. They always lived in the house with us (always been against leaving dogs outside) and were well-cared for but not really thought of as family members. Over the years, we have evolved as better dog parents. Much of this evolution came through education and life experiences. We hope to help others desire and learn to be better dog parents to the canines entrusted to us.
Our love for the Bully Breeds has also evolved. Truthfully, we didn’t really think a lot about the Bullies and especially about the segment known as Pitbulls. Of course, like so many, we would hear the occasional story about Pitbull attacks and were horrified, not only about the attack but also about the circumstances that usually surrounded the dog’s living conditions and treatment. As we delved deeper, we realized that while some of the attacks seemed to have no reason, often the dog was mistreated, tied out without socialization or taunted. All dogs can attack but Pits are exceptionally strong dogs who can do more damage than, say, a Chihuahua. That’s one of the reasons we hear about Pitbull attacks more than other breeds; that and the fact that the Press and people in general love to vilify the breed. More sensationalism.
We have always been advocates of the “underdog” and Pitbulls definitely fit this description. Many localities are working to ban the breed, even making people get rid of their dogs that even look like they have Pit in them. Sadly, many of these Pit parents can’t afford to uproot and move and often the canine family member will end up in kill shelters or bounced from home to home just because of their look. Most are loved family members who can’t understand why their family left them in a cold dark shelter. We’ve come to realize that most dogs in shelters are some form of Pit mix. They need advocates!
Our first Pittie family member was Bella, a gorgeous blue and white angel. She was taken in by our local Pound. She was underweight and an individual had seen her being thrown from a car and called the shelter. She had to be shot by a tranquilizer gun to be caught. As a result she was none too fond of the animal control officers and it was thought she did not like men. Our daughter Tina went to see her “just to look” and fell in love. She took her dad back to see how she would respond to men and Bella loved him. Bella had a new mom and grandpa. Within four months, it was discovered that Bella had an intestinal blockage caused by a corncob she had apparently ingested before being rescued. During routine testing before surgery, it was also discovered that she had a heart condition that required surgery after the intestinal surgery was completed. All-in-all, Tina’s pound puppy cost her over $12,000 in vet bills plus an ongoing cost for heart ultrasounds four times a year. Did I mention, she’s a great dog? We all love her a lot and have learned a lot about the breed from her, including the Pit “zoomies”, slobbery kisses, need to be close and undying devotion.
We want to use the Bully Dog Crew site to help educate, share experiences and advocate for the breed. Of course, there are other bully breeds, such as American Bulldogs (Bella’s sister Lexie), Old English Bulldogs (Bella’s niece and nephew Pickles and Ham), French Bulldogs and many more, as well as a great variety of Bully Mixes. All products sold on this site are sold with the purpose of supporting Bully rescues and groups advocating for the breed.
Our plans for the future include using our Bully Dog Crew to help fight bullying amongst children and plan to develop and program to help with this. Pitbulls have been bullied for so long and we feel they can help convey the anti-bullying message in a heartfelt way.
Thank you for taking this journey with us and we would love to hear from anyone that cares to contribute, either with pictures of your Bully Babies or ideas.
